Women more competent parkers than men

When it comes to parking a hire car this summer, research suggests it's best to let a woman do it.

A survey, conducted by Britain's biggest car-park operator NCP, has found that women are much more adept at parking than their male counterparts.

Despite taking 21 seconds for a woman to park, compared to man's 16, women are more likely to find a space in the first place and even park straighter, reports the Mail Online.

It seems that the female of the species is more comfortable attempting the complicated reverse park manoeuvre too. While just 28 per cent of men ambitiously attempt to reverse park into a space, 39 per cent of women do so and succeed every time they park.

Men were even trumped when it came to spacial awareness. More than half of all women (53 per cent) park more centrally than men (25 per cent), the survey of 2,500 found. However, this could also be to do with the fact that they check their mirrors more frequently. Just one in three men adjust their mirror regularly compared to over half of women.

Yorkshire-based Neil Beeson, who featured in an ITV documentary, Last Chance Driving School says that he was surprised by the results because in his experience men have been better learners than women.

Tasked with calculating the scoring system for NCP, Mr Beeson told The Scotsman: "It's possible that women retain the information better. The report shows that men need to give our partners more respect when it comes to parking. The facts don't lie!"

Automobile Association (AA) president Edmund King meanwhile put it more simply: "Men tend to talk a good game when it goes to parking, but women often show more finesse," he said.
