Downtown Atlanta is a dazzling modern metropolis, with glass sided skyscrapers and shimmering boutiques. It’s a great place to shop and explore, even if it does get a little hectic. A particularly good place to spend a few dollars is the subterranean Atlanta Underground, with four floors of stores and restaurants plunging deep into the ground below. For a little more local heritage and a calmer pace of life, Fairlie-Poplar is the original city centre. It’s still covered in buildings over a hundred years old and full of turn of the century charm. South of Downtown is Grant Park, where you can see the amazing cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta constructed in the 1880s. Further into the park there is also the wonderful Atlanta City Zoo, with an incredible Sumatran Tiger enclosure.
